I am currently getting quotes from a few local companies to help build my property website. What is teh going rate for this type of work these days. I am getting quotes back starting at $500 and going up to $20,000.

I just had a few quotes too, mine do not have a range as wide as yours, £1000-£3000.
This includes logo design, design of website, integration of secure payment system as well as free support for upto 6 months.

You can take use of some freelance site and post your requirements so that you will get rough idea of what could be the minimum/Maximum price for the project.

Why dont you Design and make your own site? Its rwally not hard, the only thing you probably need to do is get someone to make you a logo. There are enough scripts that are free to be able to do this. Or you can use payd scripts to make it. IT will be cheaper than Paying someone to make the site completley.

Just remember in most things you get what you pay for, while those Freelancing sites are cheap they are rarely quality and most people I've known who have used them normally have loads of issues to fix.

What was your brief to get the quotes from people, the tighter the brief the better the estimate.

If it was "I want a property website" your going to get quotes ranging from a couple of badly designed web pages, to a whole Estate Agent mangement system which looking at your quotes is exactly what you got.

That may be true, but you can get a better developer if you choose one who have good experience and have a excellent portfolio.
IMO not all freelancer are that bad and unreliable.

A good web developer does not just quote, he listens to your specifications in mind. Then he quotes. ITs not as simple as ow ok ill just quote you this because u want a property website. Its a tough nut of a job but you get what you pay for.

I agree Jen. I have done business analysis and QA, and while you can get good value from freelancers its usually if it is tightly specified.

If you don't have the time or inclination to specify your site to some detail, then it would be best to either hire a business analyst or get an all in web design company and pay a bit more.
